There’s nothing like a full face-mask beauty treatment to take your at-home spa day to the next level. They can make you feel deliciously decadent, beautifully self-pampered, and just a bit giddy — all part of your RDA of self-care.
We know sheet masks have been all the rage for while — leading to laughable selfies on Instagram. But these single-use, individually wrapped beauty products also feel like they belong in the past, before we knew how to green your self-care routine. Now there are lots of planet-friendly ways to refresh your face, including DIY sheet masks made from seaweed and rice paper. Still, few of us have those ingredients lying around, especially these days.
Instead, how about a face mask made with simple supplies you might already have in your kitchen? Making it might feel like a throwback to a school-age sleepover with your bestie, but that’s a good thing.
Plus, the mask below, which first appeared on BuzzFeed, has been recommended by New York dermatologist Dr. Doris Day, author of Forget the Facelift. Blend it in your kitchen, apply liberally, chuckle at yourself in the mirror (and consider snapping a selfie), then kick back on your couch while you soak up a bit of spa-day goodness (watching a classic rom-com with friends via Zoom is optional, but recommended).
How to Make a Homemade Face Mask
Ingredients
- 1/2 avocado, mashed, to hydrate and to lightly exfoliate your skin.
- 1/4 banana, mashed, to give the mask a nice consistency, and to slightly exfoliate your skin.
- 1 Tbsp coconut oil to help hydrate your skin and help prevent acne.
- 2 Tbsp dark organic honey to help make your skin moist and soft, and to help break apart excess sebum.
- 1/4 cup ground, raw oatmeal to help gently exfoliate your skin. (Add more oatmeal until it's at a consistency you like.)
Instructions
Blend ingredients, apply gently to your face, and let sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.
